American black belts can be counted on one hand; Dave Kama, Henry Akins, Chris Saunders, and Craig Husband. None of them run “mega-academies.” In fact, in Professor Craig’s case, students are “invitation-only.” Professor Dave did absolutely no marketing for the first 21 years of running Kama Jiu-Jitsu. He was not even listed on Google, or in a phone directory! Frankly, if he had a handful of students to teach to become his future training partners, life was good.
Students who stayed and were loyal to him, got the “keys to the castle,” so to speak. Since 1993, Professor Fernando Costa has been Professor Dave’s “right hand man,” and while others came and went, Fernando stayed loyal and has had all knowledge passed on to him. Likewise, to even earn rank, means you’ve earned a spot in the Kama Jiu-Jitsu family.
As a result, Kama Jiu-Jitsu has a loyal family of members; people who have trained at the academy for many, many years. That atmosphere of family was the goal we had when we opened our second location in Highland Village, TX in 2013. Now, in 2015, with Kama Jiu-Jitsu’s Highland Village campus relocating to Flower Mound, we’re continuing the tradition on a larger stage, in a larger town!
What Kama Jiu-Jitsu Is Not
We are not a full-time academy. Our Flower Mound, TX (Dallas/Ft. Worth) campus has classes for adults on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings for adults, and Saturday afternoons for kids through 8th grade. All Kama Jiu-Jitsu professors make their living doing other things. We teach because we love teaching; not because we need to do it to put food on our tables. Because we don’t “wear ourselves out” running our business and paying a lot of overhead, we concentrate on giving our students a quality experience learning Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in the traditional manner. Come check one of our campuses out and see the difference for yourself!
Kama Jiu-Jitsu Dallas Fort Worth Academy
Professor Ryan Young is the head instructor of Kama Jiu-Jitsu Dallas Fort Worth (KJJDFW), located in Flower Mound, TX (North DFW).
At Kama Jiu-Jitsu Dallas Fort Worth, like we do in our Orange County campus, we pride ourselves in teaching the true Gracie Jiu-Jitsu that focuses on self-defense first and foremost. All of our members learn the Rickson Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Self Defense from day one. That focus continues throughout your journey to black belt and beyond with teaching you to protect yourself effectively as our core mission. We cover all aspects of how to effectively protect yourself in a fight; situational awareness, conflict avoidance, dialogue, base and resistance, strikes, closing the distance, the clinch, the takedown, grappling positions, transitions, escapes, and finally, submissions to end the conflict.
Our curriculum and systems for teaching have been proven efficient and effective, over and over again. Kama Jiu-Jitsu is unlike any other BJJ school in the Dallas Metroplex. We are the only BJJ / Jiu-Jitsu school in the Metroplex (maybe all of Texas) to teach the “evolution” of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu as taught by Master Rickson Gracie. Take one class in our facility, meet the Kama Jiu-Jitsu family, and you’ll be absolutely hooked!
Our students come from all “walks”; professionals, athletes, women, children, people already in shape, people looking to get in shape, people who want a “thinking” sports activity, tall people, short people, heavy people, light people, younger people, and older people (we have always had a large percentage of students over 40).
We have a large, clean, open mat space with plenty of room to train. Our jiu-jitsu school is comfortable, and very much a “family” academy, where people come with their children and other family members to train and/or watch. Our members are good, caring people who love to help each other grow and improve in the art.
Kama Jiu-Jitsu’s classes cater to beginners, advanced, women, children, and teens.
For those looking for more individual attention to detail, or those looking for the absolute quickest way to learn Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, or for those with hectic work schedules, private, 1-on-1 and semi-private (2-4 persons) coaching sessions may be what you need, and are done on an appointment-only basis.
1-on-1 and semi-private sessions are typically conducted at our studio in Flower Mound with a “Professor” designated KJJ Black Belt, an “Assistant Professor” designated KJJ Black Belt, an “Instructor” designated Brown Belt, an “Assistant Instructor” designated Purple Belt, or a “Jr. Asst. Instructor” designated Blue Belt, depending on who we have available, and your particular needs and budget.
**At this current time, 1-on-1 sessions are only available at the “Professor” rate, and the “Jr. Asst. Instructor” rate.
Volume discount packages are also available.
We can also make arrangements to come to you, for an added nominal cost for travel and mileage.
***We have only a few available time slots remaining to allocate to 1-on-1 or semi-private sessions, so please contact us ASAP if you’re interested, especially if regular (i.e. weekly) sessions are what you desire.
At Kama Jiu-Jitsu Dallas, we are a jiu-jitsu school that teaches you the “mindset” of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, not just Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. We do this to protect us on the street; not to score points or gain an “advantage point” on our opponent. We teach you Gracie Jiu-Jitsu as we learned it from Helio’s sons (in particular, Relson, Royce, Rorion, and Rickson). Come join us for 2 WEEKS of free jiu-jitsu class, see how you like it!
Our jiu-jitsu school services Highland Village, Flower Mound, Lewisville, Denton, Double Oak, Lantana, Bartonville, Copper Canyon, Argyle, Northlake, Coppell, Grapevine, Carrollton, Colleyville, Southlake and all nearby surrounding Denton and Tarrant County areas.
